Vindicator, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island:
Vital Statistics, Oct. 1862 to Oct. 1864
Compiled and Indexed By Dan MacDonald

Winner of a Heritage Award from the Prince Edward Island Museum & Heritage Foundation!!

This is my second book project. It is a compilation of vital statistics that appeared in the Vindicator, a weekly newspaper published at Charlottetown, PEI, between 17 October 1862 and 5 October 1864. It was the predecessor to the Herald, the subject of my first compilation.

It is laser printed, 8.5x11 inches in size, with laminated covers. It is Cerlox bound (plastic comb binding).

The book contains over 400 separate articles, the majority of which are birth, marriage, and death announcements. As well, there are a variety of other reports, from obituaries and coroner's inquiries to shipping news and supreme court trials. All articles (with one exception) have been transcribed in their entirety, and even the original spelling and grammar has been maintained. Events that were reported on in more than one issue have been cross-referenced by date of publication.

There were two criteria used in selecting the material for this book.

  1. All Birth, Marriage, and Death announcements, without exception, were transcribed. Naturally, such announcements would appear grouped together in one section of the paper under the headings of BIRTH, MARRIED, and/or DIED.
  2. Any other article that recorded births, marriages, or deaths of (a) resident Islanders, (b) former Island residents living or working elsewhere, and (c) relatives of Island residents, were transcribed.

To meet the second condition, there had to be a direct connection to Prince Edward Island. If that connection did not exist, the article was not included in the book. Thus, a story relating the death of a man in California, who is specifically identified as a former Island resident, would be transcribed. A story about a fatal fire in Kansas, where the deceased have no connection to PEI, would not be transcribed. Since my intention was to compile Island records for Island researchers, I believe these omissions are acceptable.

Complementing the 60 pages of data is an index of the 900 personal names that appear throughout the book. It is a nominal index only, and therefore does not list place names, company names, or other details. Each unique name is noted separately, using the spelling that appeared in the original articles. In some cases, name and spelling variants have been grouped together. As well, where both were known through the information provided in the articles, married women were indexed by both their maiden and married names.

Please note that the book consists only of data published in the Vindicator between its inaugural issue of 17 October 1862 and 5 October 1864. Within these dates, there are a few gaps of missing issues. The dates of the missing issues are as follows:
