The Ancestors of Gabriel Gallant of Mont-Carmel and Summerside, PEI

I do have an interest in the descendants of Michel Haché dit Gallant, as I am also one. However, the Gallant line has never been a research priority for me, as I prefer to concentrate on some of my other lines instead.

This particular file started as a "make-work" project - something I could play with whenever I was stuck or needed a break from my other research. Now, it has nothing to do with my own Gallant family lines. Instead, it traces the direct ancestry of my nieces who, through their father, are descendants of this branch through #22, Gabriel Gallant.

The majority of the research I conducted into this family was done in late 2000 or early 2001, after I made contact with another descendant of the same branch. What I have posted here is the result of our joint effort from that time (minus the later generations, which have been removed as some are still living). Since then, I have acquired some more resources which mention some of the members of this family. I have also conducted more research into a few of the people noted here since, through marriage, they connect into other families I have examined.

As time permits, I will attempt to update this file with the new data I have obtained. I will try and fill you in on any other information that I have. Please note, though, that I can't be of assistance on any families prior to those included in the sixth generation - they are simply beyond the scope of my research.

First Generation

1. Michel² Haché-Gallant (Pierre¹ Larcher)

Michel was born in Acadia circa 1662, probably the son of Pierre Larcher. He was baptized at Trois-Rivière, Québec, on 24 April 1668. He was first recorded at Beaubassin in 1682 before relocating to Port-Lajoie, Île St-Jean (PEI), in 1720. He drowned in la rivière du Nord (North River), near Port-Lajoie, on 10 April 1737, and was buried at Port-Lajoie on 17 July 1737.

Michel was married, circa 1690, to Anne Cormier, the daughter of Thomas Cormier and Madeleine Girouard. Anne was born circa 1674 and died at Île St-Jean sometime after 10 January 1739.

2. Pierre³ Haché-Gallant (Michel² Haché-Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Pierre was born at Beaubassin circa 1701. He died before 3 June 1760.

Pierre was married, circa 1725, to Cécile Lavergne, the daughter of Pierre Lavergne and Anne Bernon.

3. Louis⁴ Haché-Gallant (Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Louis was born at Port Lajoye circa 1727. By 1760, after the expulsion, he was in Restigouche and, later, at Shippegan, where he apparently died.

On 8 January 1753, Louis was married at St. Pierre-du-Nord to Anne Chiasson, the daughter of François Chiasson and Anne Doucet. Anne died at Shippegan on 13 April 1814.

4. Firmain⁵ Gallant (Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Firmain married (1) Madeleine Poirier, the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Poirier. Madeleine died sometime prior to February 1821, when her husband remarried.

Children (not necessarily in correct order of birth):

Firmain married (2) Martine Bernard, the widow of Simon Arsenault of Egmont Bay, on 5 February 1821 at Mont-Carmel. The witnesses to the marriage included Ange Gallant, Hilarion Bernard, Jacques Bernard, Charlotte Gallant, and Henriette Bernard. She was possibly the daughter of Hilarion Bernard and Marie Gallant. Firmain and Martine did not have any children.

Fifth Generation

5. Pierre⁶ Gallant (Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Pierre was born, according to his marriage record, which lists him as a "minor", after 1797.

On 7 April 1818, Pierre was married at Lot 15 to Madeleine Aucoin, the daughter of Jean Aucoin and Rosalie Bernard of Cascumpeque, PEI. The witnesses present for the marriage included Firmain Gallant, Marcel Aucoin, and Jacques Bernard. Madeleine was born prior to 1800.

Sixth Generation

6. Bruno⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Bruno was born at Mont-Carmel, PEI, on 26 March 1819. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 2 July 1819 with Simon Aucoin and Magdeleine Poirier acting as his godparents. Bruno died between 1881 and 1894. He was a farmer.

Bruno married Edesse Poirier at Mont-Carmel on 25 November 1839 in the presence of Grégoire Gallant and Magdeleine Gallant. Edesse, the daughter of Bénoni Poirier and Cécile Richard, was born at Miscouche, PEI, on 20 September 1817 and baptized at Miscouche on 19 October 1817 with Basile Poirier and Marie Poirier acting as her godparents. She died between 1881 and 1894.

7. Grégoire⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Grégoire was born at Mont-Carmel on 13 October 1820. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 3 February 1821 with Bruno Gallant and Marguerite Aucoin acting as his godparents. He was farmer at Lot 15.

He married Marie Arsenault, the daughter of François Arsenault and Françoise Poirier of Mont-Carmel, on 5 November 1844 at Mont-Carmel. The witnesses to their marriage included Thaddée Arsenault and Appoline Gallant. They were granted dispensations of the third to fourth and fourth to fourth degrees of consanguinity. Marie was born after 1826.

8. Hyacinthe⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Hyacinthe was born at Mont-Carmel on 10 May 1822. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 24 July 1822 with Firmain Gallant and Suzanne Aucoin acting as his godparents.

On 11 February 1846, he was married at Egmont Bay to Marguerite Arsenault, the daughter of Mélème Arsenault and Bibianne Poirier of Egmont Bay. The witnesses to the marriage included Thomas Arsenault and Appoline Gallant. Marguerite was born after 1828.

9. Firmain⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Firmain was born at Mont-Carmel on 5 November 1823. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 8 December 1825 with Raphael Poirier and Marie Gallant acting as his godparents. He was a farmer.

On 30 October 1849, he was married at Egmont Bay to Marguerite Arsenault, the daughter of Joseph Arsenault and Isabelle Poirier of Egmont Bay. The witnesses to the marriage included Gilbert Arsenault and Magdeleine Gallant. Marguerite was born prior to 1831.

10. Appoline⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Appoline was born at Mont-Carmel on 21 February 1826. She was baptized at Mont-Carmel on the same day with Cyprien Gallant and Esther Aucoin acting as her godparents.

On 11 January 1848, she was married at Mont-Carmel to Thaddée Arsenault, the son of François Arsenault and Françoise Poirier of Mont-Carmel. Among those present for the ceremony were Firmain Gallant and Luce Poirier. Father Perrey granted dispensations of the third to fourth and fourth to fourth degrees of consanguinity. Thaddée was born prior to 1827.

11. Sophique⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Sophique (or Séraphique) was born at Mont-Carmel on 31 May 1830. She was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 8 September 1830 with Louis Gallant and Marie Gallant acting as her godparents.

She married Amand Richard, the son of Charles Richard and Brigitte Downing of Mont-Carmel, on 8 May 1854 at Mont-Carmel. Amand was born on 18 August 1829 and was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 1 February 1830. Father Perrey granted a dispensation of the third to third degree of consanguinity and noted that the marriage was witnessed by Antoine Richard and Sophique Richard, among others.

Sophique died on 8 June 1905, aged 75. Amand died on 16 August 1899, aged 71 (sic). They are both buried at Mont-Carmel.

12. Madeleine⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Madeleine (or Magdeleine) was born circa 1831.

She married Firmain Arsenault, the son of Isaïe Arsenault and Marie Poirier of Miscouche, on 11 November 1851 at Mont-Carmel. They were granted a dispensation of the fourth to fourth degree double of consanguinity. Among those listed in attendance for the ceremony were Saturnin Poirier and Séraphique Gallant. Firmain was born prior to 1830.

13. Jean⁷ Gallant (Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Jean was born on 20 January 1832. No further information.

Seventh Generation

14. Cécile⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Cécile was born at Mont-Carmel on 22 December 1840. She was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 11 January 1841 with Joseph Poirier and Magdeleine Aucoin acting as her godparents.

On 11 October 1870, she was married at Egmont Bay to Prospère Arsenault, the son of Joseph Arsenault and Judith Gallant. They were granted dispensations of the fourth degree of double consanguinity and the third-to-fourth degree of simple affinity. The witnesses to the marriage were Pierre Gallant and Marie Arsenault. Prospère, born circa 1839, was married first to Sarah Gallant (1864, Mont-Carmel), the daughter of André Gallant and Gertrude Bernard. By his first wife, Prospère had one son, Jean, born circa 1867.

Pierre was born at Mont-Carmel on 9 November 1843. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 30 November 1843 with Grégoire Gallant and Appoline Gallant acting as his godparents.

16. Joseph⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Joseph was born at Mont-Carmel on 8 May 1846. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 17 May 1846 with Hyacinthe Gallant and Magdeleine Gallant acting as his godparents.

17. Marie⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Marie was born at Mont-Carmel on 26 September 1849. She was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 30 September 1849 with Firmain Gallant and Séraphique Gallant acting as her godparents.

18. Philippe⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Philippe was born at Mont-Carmel on 28 July 1852. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 1 August 1852 with Amable Gaudet and Marguerite Arsenault acting as his godparents. He was a farmer at Mont-Carmel.

He married Adèle Blaquière, the daughter of Thomas Blaquière and Hélène Pineau, on 20 September 1875 at Summerside. She was born 2 October 1843 at Rustico and was baptized the same day with Amand LeClair and Ursule Pineau acting as her godparents.

19. Avis⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Avis was born at Mont-Carmel on 3 November 1854. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 26 November 1854 with Thaddée Arsenault and Marie Arsenault acting as his godparents.

20. Jean⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Jean was born at Mont-Carmel on 13 March 1858. He was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 17 April 1858 with Amand Richard and Cécile Gallant acting as his godparents.

He was married to Marie Gallant, the daughter of Joseph Gallant and Adèle Blaquiere, on 19 November 1889 at Mont-Carmel. The witnesses to the marriage were Eloi Gallant and Madeleine Gallant. Marie was born prior to 1871.

21. Madeleine⁸ Gallant (Bruno⁷, Pierre⁶, Firmain⁵, Louis⁴, Pierre³, Michel² Haché Gallant, Pierre¹ Larcher)

Madeleine (or Magdeleine) was born at Mont-Carmel on 5 September 1860. She was baptized at Mont-Carmel on 9 September 1860 with Firmain Arsenault and Anne Arsenault acting as her godparents.

On 23 January 1894, she was married at Mont-Carmel to Jean Arsenault, the son of Jean Arsenault and Edesse Arsenault of Egmont Bay. Jean was born prior to 1873.
