The Descendants of Daniel Rogers and Olivia Chappell

This family is not related to my own Rogers, nor are they one that I am actively researching. However, through my own efforts, as well as attempts to answer queries from others about this group, I have collected some data on them. I present this information with the understanding that I have no intimate knowledge of the family, and have not conducted any detailed or in-depth research on them. However, I will gladly accept any additions or corrections to what I have posted here. While I have provided a list of the sources used at the bottom of this page, please contact me directly for specific source references.

First Generation

1. Daniel1 Rogers

Daniel is believed to have been born circa 1789 in Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia. Along with his wife and children, he relocated to Prince Edward Island circa 1818 and is thought to have settled in Lot 16.

Daniel married Olivia Chappell on 29 November 1809 at the Baptist Church, Cornwallis, Kings County, Nova Scotia. Olivia was born circa 1790.

Children (exact order uncertain, possibly incomplete):

  1. i. James Rogers was born on 9 July 1812. He was baptized on 16 April 1818 at St. Jean-Baptiste RC Church, Miscouche, PEI.
  2. ii. Mary Alice Rogers was born on 12 May 1814. She was baptized on 16 April 1818 at St. Jean-Baptiste RC Church, Miscouche, PEI.
  3. iii. George Rogers was born on 30 November 1816. He was baptized on 14 April 1818 at St. Jean-Baptiste RC Church, Miscouche, PEI.
  4. + iv. John Rogers: b. 15 Jan 1818; m. Marie Doiron.
  5. v. Samuel Rogers was born on 10 April 1823. He was baptized at St. John's Anglican Church, Richmond Parish (St. Eleanor's), PEI, on 21 December 1823.
  6. vi. Daniel Rogers was born on 11 May 1825. He was baptized at St. John's Anglican Church, Richmond Parish (St. Eleanor's), PEI, on 3 July 1825.
Second Generation

5. John2 Rogers (Daniel1)

John was born on 15 January 1818, likely on Prince Edward Island. He was baptized at St. Jean-Baptiste Roman Catholic Church, Miscouche, on 14 April 1818.

He was married to Marie Doiron on 18 October 1842 at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Rustico . Marie was the daughter of Jean-Charles Doiron and Scholastique Poirier of Rustico. She was born, based on her age at time of death, circa 1806.

John had 50 acres of land at St. Mary's in Lot 22, south of the Millvale Road, and bordered on the east and west by the St. Mary's Road and the St. Patrick's Road respectively. This property is shown in his possession on the 1863 Lake's Map, and again in the 1880 Meacham's Atlas.

John died at Hope River on 8 November 1888. He was buried at St. Ann's RC Cemetery on the following day. Marie died at Hope River on 8 August 1891, aged 84 years. She was buried at St. Ann's RC Cemetery on 12 August 1891.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. Elizabeth Rogers was born on 13 August 1843. She was baptized at St. Augustine's RC Church, Rustico, on 14 August 1843. She is possibly the Elizabeth Gallant, widow, enumerated with her parents and her daughter, Mary, in 1881. And, also the Elizabeth Rogers, widow, enumerated with her daughter, Mary, in 1901.
  2. + ii. Zacharie Rogers: b. 19 July 1845; m. Marie Doiron.
  3. + iii. Jean-Charles Rogers: b. 16 Sep 1848; m. Blanche Doucet.
  4. + iv. Onésime Rogers: b. 5 Jun 1850; m. Barbe Blanchard; d. 30 Mar 1911.
  5. + v. Joseph Rogers: b. 21 Feb 1852; m. Valérie Gallant.
Third Generation

9. Zacharie3 Rogers (John2, Daniel1)

Zacharie was born on 19 July 1845. He was baptized at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Rustico, PEI, on 3 August 1845. He resided in Millvale, where he had 60 acres of land near the head of the Trout River.

He was married to Marie Doiron at St. Augustine's RC Church, Rustico, on 26 January 1869. She was the daughter of Joseph Doiron and Charlotte Gallant.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. + i. Joseph Rogers: b. ca. 1870; m. Marie Peters.
  2. ii. Mary Rogers was born on 25 December 1871. She was residing with the family in 1901. No further information.
  3. + iii. Charlotte Rogers: b. ca. 1873; m. Joseph Blaquière.
  4. iv. Margaret Rogers was born on 5 April [1876-?]. She was residing with the family, aged 24, in 1901. No further information.
  5. v. John Rogers was born on 24 september 1877. He was residing with the family in 1901. No further information.
  6. vi. Sylvia Rogers was born on 21 July 1879. She was residing with the family in 1901. No further information.
  7. vii. Elizabeth Rogers was born on 28 May 1881. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 5 June 1881.
  8. viii. Eusèbe Rogers was born on 2 May 1883. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 13 May 1883. He died in September 1887 and was buried at St. Ann's RC Cemetery, Hope River, on 6 September 1887.
  9. ix. Rosalie Rogers was born on 27 November 1884. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 30 November 1884.
  10. x. Philomène Rogers was born on 4 December 1886. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 12 December 1886.
  11. xi. Robert Eusèbe Rogers was born on 6 May 1888. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 13 May 1888. Possibly the Robert E. Rogers who was married to Loretta Stacey (1891-1966), and died in 1965, being buried at Hope River.
  12. xii. André Rogers was born on 12 July 1890. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 13 July 1890.

10. Jean-Charles3 Rogers (John2, Daniel1)

Jean was born on 16 September 1848. He was baptized at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Rustico, on 17 September 1848.

On 15 October 1872, he was married at St. Augustine's RC Church, Rustico, to (1) Blanche Doucet, the daughter of Léon Doucet and Barbe Doiron of Rustico. There do not appear to have been any children from this marriage. However, I have not found any baptism records for Marie and Remi, so cannot prove that they were born from the second marriage. Blanche is believed to have died prior to the 1881 census, when Jean was enumerated with his second wife.

He married (2) Mathilde Blaquière.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. Marie Rogers was born on 19 July 1878. She was residing with the family in 1881 and 1901. No further information.
  2. ii. Remi Rogers was born on 25 November 1879. He was residing with the family in 1881 and 1901. No further information.
  3. iii. Philomène Blanche Rogers was born on 26 January 1882. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 10 February 1882.
  4. iv. Judith Rogers was born on 21 September 1883. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 23 September 1883.
  5. v. Henri Rogers was born on 2 January 1886. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 3 January 1886.
  6. vi. Elizabeth Anne Rogers was born on 27 November 1887. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 4 December 1887.
  7. vii. Antime Rogers was born on 5 September 1890. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 7 September 1890.
  8. viii. Veronique Angeline Rogers was born on 30 August 1894. She was baptized at Hope River on 1 September 1894. It is assumed that she died in infancy as she is not listed with the family in the 1901 census.
  9. ix. Thomas Rogers was born on 25 November 1896. He was residing with the family in 1901. No further information.

11. Onésime3 Rogers (John2, Daniel1)

Onésime was born on 5 June 1850. He was baptized at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Rustico, on 6 June 1850.

He was married to Barbe Blanchard on 21 January 1890 at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, PEI. The daughter of Sylvestre Blanchard and Marie Doiron, she was born on 16 May 1863 and baptized at St. Augustine's RC Church, Rustico, on 17 May 1863.

In 1881, Onésime was enumerated in the household of Daniel Ross, farmer, where he was listed as being a servant, single, aged 23.

Onésime moved his family from Lot 22 to Rogersville, New Brunswick, sometime between May 1893 and January 1895, between the baptisms of his second and third children. The 1901 New Brunswick census records his occupation as day-labourer ("journalier").

Barbe died on 17 March 1907 at Rogersville. Onésime died on 30 March 1911, and was buried at Rogersville on 1 April 1911.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. Jean Ignace Rogers was born at Hope River, PEI, on 15 February 1892. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 16 February 1892. A note added to his baptismal record states that he was married on 25 November 1925, the location and name of spouse are not legible.
  2. + ii. Marie Emilie Rogers: b. 7 May 1893; m. Firmin Pineau.
  3. iii. Jean Vincent (George) Rogers was born at Acadieville, NB, on 12 January 1895. He was baptized at Rogersville, NB, on 27 January 1895. The 1901 NB Census lists his name as "George".
  4. + iv. Cécile Rogers: b. 20 Jul 1897; m. Johnnie Richard.

12. Joseph3 Rogers (John2, Daniel1)

Joseph was born on 21 February 1852. He was baptized at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Rustico, PEI, on 22 February 1852.

He was married to Valérie Gallant.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. + i. Félix Rogers: b. 16 Apr 1878; m. Genevieve Gallant.
  2. ii. Catherine Rogers was born on 29 July 1882. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 1 August 1882.
  3. iii. Anthime Rogers was born on 30 June 1883. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 1 July 1883.
  4. iv. André Rogers was born on 7 October 1885. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 11 October 1885.
  5. v. Joseph Rogers was born on 3 December 1886. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 12 December 1886.
  6. vi. Mary Ann Rogers was born on 26 June 1889. She was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 28 June 1889.
  7. vii. Cyrille Rogers was born on 15 November 1890. He was baptized at St. Ann's RC Church, Hope River, on 16 November 1890.
  8. viii. Joseph Ignace was born on 7 April 1894. He was baptized at Hope River on 13 April 1894.
  9. ix. George Rogers was born on 1 September 1896. He was baptized at Hope River on 6 September 1896. It is presumed that he died in infancy. He was not listed with the family in the 1901 census.
  10. x. George Anthony Rogers was born on 21 July 1898. He was baptized at Hope River on 24 July 1898. A note attached to his baptismal record states that he was married at Boston, Mass., on 13 July 1930. However, the name of his spouse was not recorded.
Fourth Generation

13. Joseph4 Rogers (Zacharie3, John2, Daniel1)

Joseph was born circa 1870.

On 23 August 1898, he was married at Hope River to Marie Peters, the daughter of Maurice Peters and Delphine Doiron. She was born on 12 January 1866. Mary is possibly the Mrs. Joseph Roger (1867-1939) who is buried at Hope River.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. John Stanislaus Rogers was born on 13 July 1899. He was baptized at Hope River on 14 July 1899. A note added to his baptismal record states that he was married at Summerside on 5 October 1927 to Bertha G. Arsenault.

15. Charlotte4 Rogers (Zacharie3, John2, Daniel1)

Charlotte was born circa 1873. She was enumerated with her parents, aged 7, in the 1881 census.

She was married at Hope River on 12 February 1896 to Joseph Blaquière, the son of Moses Blaquière and Françoise Doiron. A farmer, he was born on 23 December 1867.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. Angeline Ann Blaquière was born on 15 January 1897. She was baptized at Hope River on 17 January 1897.
  2. ii. Andrew Blaquière was born on 21 May 1899. He was baptized at Hope River on 28 May 1899.

35. Marie Emilie4 Rogers (Onésime3, John2, Daniel1)

Marie was born at Hope River, PEI, on 7 May 1893. She was baptized there on 8 May 1893.

She married (1) Arthur Barriault on 4 July 1916 at Acadieville, New Brunswick. The son of Sylvain Barriault and Rosalie Daigle, he was born at Acadieville on 14 May 1879. Arthur died on 5 June 1918 at the age of 40, and was buried at Acadieville on 8 June 1918. Marie and Arthur did not have any children.

She married (2) Firmin Pineau on 21 October 1925. The son of Némoire Pineau and Marine Pitre, he was born at Acadieville on 2 October 1889. According to the 1901 NB Census, both of his parents were originally from PEI. Firmin was the widower of Ozélie Richard, by whom he had at least one child, Joseph Antoine, born in 1913. Ozélie had died at the Newcastle hospital on 27 June 1924 and was buried at Acadieville on 29 June 1924.


37. Cécile4 Rogers (Onésime3, John2, Daniel1)

Cécile was born at Rogersville, NB, on 20 July 1897. She was baptized at Rogersville on 8 August 1897.

She married Johnnie Richard, the son of Willie Richard and Onésime Henri at Acadieville, NB, on 28 August 1916. He was born ca 1890.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. Ann Marie Richard was born on 8 December 1917. She was baptized at Acadieville, NB, on 10 December 1917.

38. Félix4 Rogers (Joseph3, John2, Daniel1)

Félix was born on 16 April 1878.

He was married to Genevieve Gallant on 10 November 1899 at Hope River. Born 18 August 1879, she was the daughter of Theophilus Gallant and Adelaide Pineau.

Children (possibly incomplete):

  1. i. James Rogers was born on 29 December 1899. He was baptized at Hope River on 1 January 1900. It is presumed he died in infancy, as he was not listed with his parents in the 1901 census.
  2. ii. Joseph R. Rogers was born on 7 February 1901. He was enumerated with the family in the 1901 census. No further information.
Notes
  1. A Silas Rogers and his wife, Elizabeth Chappell, appear in the same early PEI records as Daniel and Olivia. I believe that this is a case of two brothers marrying two sisters, but have insufficient evidence at the present to prove it. Two of Silas' children were baptized at Miscouche - Agnes in 1817 and Donate [possibly Donald??] in 1819, and Silas is recorded as residing at Lot 14. I have no further record of them after 1819. It has been suggested that Silas and his wife may have moved on to New Brunswick.
  2. Except for John, I have no further information on any of the children of Daniel and Olivia. It is possible they were married, and had their children baptized, in a Protestant church. The family does appear to have been Protestant rather than Roman Catholic, although their appearance in Catholic records in that locale and time period is not unusual. It does not imply a conversion to the Catholic faith. Unfortunately, I don't have regular and easy access to Protestant church records and so have not yet had a chance to review many for this family. It is also possible that some of the children died in infancy, or moved away before marrying. There is too much of a gap between the baptism records and the first available census records in 1881 to make any suppositions on what became of them and their descendants.
  3. Between 1872 and 1881, there is a gap in the church records concerning this family. From the marriage of John, son of Daniel and Olivia, to Marie Doiron, until 1872, this family appears in the registers for St. Augustine's RC, Rustico, although it is still incomplete for the 1860's. From 1881, they appear in the records for St. Anne's RC, Hope River. But, although the family resided at Lot 22 the whole time, they are not listed at Rustico or any of the surrounding parishes (the Hope River register only starts in 1881) for the years 1872 to 1881. Because of that, the records for the second marriage of Jean-Charles and the marriage of Joseph are missing, as are some other records for this family.
  4. The 1891 Census for Prince Edward Island, Lot 22, is no longer extant. However, the 1890 Roman Catholic Census of Prince Edward Island, Parish of St. Ann's, Hope River, may shed some further light on the family. I have not had a chance to review the RC census for this family.
