The Mission of St. Eugene's, Cove Head
This mission which comprises Township Thirty Four, is almost exclusively settled by Irish farmers.
The first church, a log building, thirty feet in length, was erected about 1832 by the late Rev. John MacDonald of Glenaladale.
The proprietor of the Township, the late James Graham Montgomery, having given Bishop MacDonald three acres of land for a church site and cemetery, the present wooden edifice was erected thereon in 1853, during the pastorate of the Rev. Thomas Phelan, Michael Walsh being the builder. This church has a tower and spire and a good vestry.
Cove Head was at one time part of Tracadie Parish, but after the departure of Father John MacDonald, it was served from Charlottetown up to 1860, since which time it has again depended on Tracadie.
The mission formerly contained forty Catholic families. At present there are not more than twenty six, Mass is celebrated in St. Eugene's Church every third Sunday.
